Recognising God’s Voice Amidst Life’s Noise: A Journey for Women Transitioning to Self-Employment

In the hustle of daily responsibilities, the constant ping of notifications, and the rush to meet deadlines, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed—especially when standing at the crossroads of significant life changes.

For women aged 50 to 65, contemplating a shift from working under a boss to embracing the freedom (and uncertainties) of self-employment or starting an online business, the noise isn’t just external. It’s internal too: the worry about the future, the world’s narrow view of retirement looming on the horizon, and the haunting question—“What if I’m not successful in creating a proper income at this stage of my life? Will I simply become another statistic of decline, when God promises us so much more?”

But amidst all the commotion around us, there’s a still, small voice longing to be heard—God’s voice. How do you recognise it in the busyness of life?

How do you find clarity when your heart is cluttered?

Recognising God's Voice Admidst Life's Noise: A Journey for Women Transitioning to Self-Employment

The Power of Solitude and Silence

Picture this: You’re sitting quietly, no background music, no phone buzzing, just the soft rhythm of your breath. At first, it feels uncomfortable. Your mind races with to-do lists, fears about finances, and doubts about your business idea. But as you sit longer, something shifts. The noise settles. Your heart slows. And in that special stillness, you sense it—a gentle whisper, a nudge, a peace you can’t explain.

Practising solitude and silence isn’t about escaping your responsibilities. It’s about anchoring your soul amidst them. Even Jesus, amidst performing miracles and leading disciples, often withdrew to solitary places to pray. If He needed solitude, how much more do we?

Why Silence Feels Uncomfortable (But Why You Need It)

Many women transitioning into self-employment feel uneasy with silence. Why? Because silence exposes what busyness masks—our fears, insecurities, and unhealed wounds. But here’s the paradox: what we often avoid is where healing begins.

  • Silence isn’t empty; it’s full of God.
  • Solitude isn’t loneliness; it’s an intimate meeting with your Father who has your best interest at heart.

“Take immediate action when it comes to distractions and cares! Fling them upon the Lord! He’s got your best interest at heart! And He’s got your back! 1 Peter 5:7 (Mirror Bible)

In silence, your soul detoxes. The stress, anxiety, and emotional clutter rise to the surface—not to overwhelm you, but so God can gently deal with them. You begin to hear His voice—not in dramatic revelations, but in simple, profound whispers: “You are enough,” “I am with you,” “Trust Me.”

Practical Steps to Hear God's Voice

Practical Steps to Hear God's Voice

You don’t need a retreat centre or hours of free time. Start small:

  • Choose a Time: Five to ten minutes daily. Consistency is key.
  • Find a Quiet Space: A corner of your room, your car before errands, or a spot in the garden.
  • Be Still: Relax your body, slow your breathing.
  • Invite Him In: Whisper, “Lord, I’m here. I’m listening.”
  • Let Thoughts Pass: Don’t judge wandering thoughts. Gently return your focus to God.

Over time, these moments of stillness become special spaces where worries lose their grip, and clarity emerges.

The Transition: From Fear to Faith

Starting a business at 50 or 60 isn’t just a career move—it’s a faith journey. The fears are real: “What if I don’t succeed?”, “Is it too late?”, “Will I be financially secure?”

But in solitude, God reframes these fears. Consider this:

  • Your worth isn’t tied to productivity.
  • Your identity isn’t defined by your job title.
  • Your future isn’t solely dependent on your efforts—it’s held in God’s hands.

When you create space to hear God, He shifts your focus from fear to faith. You start seeing your business not just as an income source but as a calling, a way to serve, to create, to reflect God’s creativity.

Stories of Transformation

Many women have found that silence became the catalyst for change:

  • A woman nearing retirement, overwhelmed by financial worries, started with five minutes of silence daily. Over time, she felt nudged to pursue her passion for writing, which evolved into a thriving freelance career.
  • Another, after decades in corporate life, felt lost when she left her job. In solitude, she rediscovered her love for coaching and now runs her own online mentoring business, guiding others through transitions.

Their common thread? They stopped chasing answers in the noise and found direction in the quiet.

The Fruits of Stillness

As you cultivate the practice of stillness, you’ll notice:

  • Clarity: Decisions become easier as you discern God’s gentle guidance.
  • Peace: Not the absence of challenges, but a calm amidst them.
  • Confidence: Rooted not in self-reliance but in God’s promises.
  • Presence: Fully engaged in each moment, unburdened by past regrets or future anxieties.

And if you’re longing to deepen your ability to recognise God’s whispers in daily life, I recommend the book Hearing God’s Voice. It’s a powerful tool to cultivate spiritual clarity and make decisions with peace. You can find it here.

A Gentle Challenge

Today, amidst your busy schedule, give God ten quiet minutes. No agenda. No requests. Just sit. Be still. Listen.

You may not hear a booming voice. But you’ll sense it—a peace, a reassurance, a gentle nudge.

As you step into this new chapter, remember: You’re not alone. God’s voice isn’t lost; it’s simply patiently waiting beneath the noise.

So, close your eyes. Breathe. Listen. He’s already there.
